Vanilla Cake
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup milk
Chocolate Frosting
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- 4 oz semi-sweet or dark chocolate, melted and cooled
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3–4 tbsp milk or heavy cream (adjust for consistency)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Make the batter: Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
- In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.
- Divide batter between pans and bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Make the frosting: Beat butter, powdered sugar, and cocoa until smooth. Mix in melted chocolate, vanilla, and milk until creamy and spreadable.
- Assemble: Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread frosting, top with the second layer, and frost the entire cake.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for best results.
Don’t overmix the batter to avoid a tough cake.
Adjust frosting thickness by adding more powdered sugar (thicker) or milk (thinner).
Add sprinkles, berries, or ganache drizzle for decoration.
